At 2:25 AM West Mead #1 was dispatched for a vehicle fire with no exposures on Ravine Street. Fire Chief Brad Johnston arrived on scene and reported a fully involved pickup with power lines overhead. When Engine 28-12 arrived, its crew pulled a 150-foot preconnected 1 3/4″ handline. A two-man hose team approached the vehicle and hosed down the exterior of the car. Magnesium in the cab flared up after water was applied, so a dry chemical extinguisher was used to smother the flames. The passenger and driver’s doors were forced using hand tools and a hydraulic Holmatro Combi-Tool to complete overhaul in the cab.
The fire was ruled accidental due to electrical malfunction. After turning the scene over to state police, all 28 units returned to quarters and service by 4:07 AM.
