On November 27 West Mead #1 was dispatched to a motor vehicle accident involving a single tractor-trailer on US 322 near McHenry St. Crews responded with 28-13, 28-12, and 28-14. The tractor’s fuel tanks and trailer had ruptured, spreading diesel fuel and the bottled water cargo into the nearby creek. Department 28 provided traffic control, scene lighting, and hazardous materials containment using absorbent pads and boom. All 28 units returned to service about five hours after dispatch.

The department received a commendation from ECS&R for its effective hazardous materials response in preventing the further spread of contaminants.
