West Mead #1 was asked by township authorities to provide an engine crew for public service. With the end of winter approaching, West Mead roadmaster John Shartle was preparing to store crushed rock in a bin formerly used for sand, and the bin needed to be cleaned so the rock could be effectively applied to tar and chip roadways. Engine 28-12 responded with a crew to the assignment, which took about an hour and a half to complete.
