West Mead #1 was invited by West Mead #2 for an evening of training on roof ventilation, ladders, and SCBA at their station on Ryan Road. Personnel from both departments were paired up and split into three groups that rotated through three training evolutions. Deputy Chief Tim Foriska coached the two-member teams through roof ventilation on a recently-built training prop. Assistant Chief Jim Pratt reviewed ladder carries and raises with the second group, while Chief Landon Silva conducted SCBA confidence drills through a maze around, over, and through a set of obstacles.
After the groups concluded their separate exercises, Jim Pratt presented a quick overview of firefighter CPR, which could be used to resuscitate a downed firefighter.
He also demonstrated two options using a handline to rescue a firefighter who falls through the floor but is still responsive.
Videos demonstrating a single horseshoe raise and a double horseshoe rescue are available online.
