West Mead #1 Volunteer Fire Department kicks off its 2016 fund drive on March 1, and this year’s goal is $30,000.

The fire department is seeking donations from its customers, the residents and businesses of its district. West Mead 1 provides “first-due” fire, rescue and emergency medical services in the southern half of West Mead Township. It also provides mutual aid to all of the other surrounding areas.

West Mead 1 will utilize the proceeds from this year’s fund drive to offset its operating expenses. Any excess will go into savings for future apparatus, building and equipment needs. One of the future projects on the radar is the much-needed renovation of the department’s 1949 truck room at its Liberty Street station, the department said in a press release. The current space is too small for today’s apparatus, and its utilities are outdated, the release read.

West Mead 1 is an all-volunteer fire department that responds to more than 200 incidents each year. In addition to seeking contributions from those it serves, it is also seeking quality membership candidates.
