Just before midnight West Mead #1 was dispatched to assist Vernon Township VFD with a dumpster fire at Ainsworth Pet Nutrition. Engines 28-12 and 28-13 responded to the location behind the facility, where a fire in a 30-yard roll-off dumpster was beginning to spread to a second dumpster. Vernon Central also responded with a tanker to help with water supply. 28-12’s crew deployed an 1 3/4″ handline and set up ladders to access the dumpster, while 28-13 laid a 100′ section of 4″ large diameter hose to connect to a nearby hydrant. Firefighters used pike poles and New York hooks to open up the smoldering layers of cardboard and other trash. After soaking down the contents of both dumpsters, all 28 units returned to service by 1:16 AM.
