Sustained Water Flow Drill
On June 12 West Mead 1 firefighters practiced fire attack with a focus on adequate water flow for a sustained fire attack.
Highland Ave Duplex Fire, Assist to Meadville Central
At 3:38 AM West Mead #1 was dispatched with Vernon Central and Saegertown to assist Meadville Central with a structure fire on Highland Avenue. Engines 28-13 and 28-12 responded to the scene, a two-story wood-frame residential duplex, where crews from Meadville Central and West Mead 2 were already at work extinguishing the fire that began on the porch and spread into the apartment and up the eaves.
Vehicle Accident on Pettis Road
At 8:59 AM West Mead 1 was dispatched for a motor vehicle accident with injury and unknown entrapment on Pettis Road. Engine 28-13 and Fire Police Captain Chris Millhorn responded to the scene, a single vehicle off the roadway in the ditch.
Natural Gas Leak on Chad Lane
At 10:53 AM West Mead 1 was dispatched for a natural gas leak on Chad Lane. Engine 28-13 responded to the scene, where a construction crew operating with an excavator had sheared off into a service line that was not marked by the PA One Call service.
Longer Hoselines for High-Occupancy Buildings
On Tuesday West Mead 1 members reviewed and practiced longer hoseline deployments into multi-family residential buildings off Arthur Street in Forest Green Estates and Woodland Heights.
Hosebed Update for Drill
This past Tuesday members spent time updating the hosebed on 28-13. While the standard hoseline for residential structure fires on our engines is an 1.75" line that is capable of around 175 gpm, the department also utilizes 2.5" attack line for larger fires in commercial buildings and our larger apartment complexes.
Structure Fire Assist to Utica
At 12:11 AM West Mead 1 was dispatched with Cochranton to assist Utica with a structure fire along US 322. Engine 28-12 responded with a full crew to the scene. Department 28 spent the bulk of time on suppression and overhaul on the most damaged building, a post-frame metal garage.
Cochranton Road Accident with Injury and Entrapment
At 7:06 AM West Mead #1 was dispatched with Meadville Ambulance for a motor vehicle accident with entrapment and injury on Cochranton Road near Wilson Chutes. Meadville Central and Cochranton were requested to assist with rescue and traffic control.
Recruitment and Retention Seminar
On March 28 Fire Chief Brad Johnston and Assistant Fire Chief Craig Lauer attended a Recruitment and Retention training program hosted at Edinboro Volunteer Fire Department, with round table discussions regarding recruiting, retaining volunteers, and what drives volunteers away who already serve.
Burning Complaint on Alden St
At 4:04 PM West Mead #1 was dispatched for an engine crew to respond to a reported violation of West Mead Township's burning ordinance on Alden Street. Engine 28-12 responded to the scene and found an unattended smoldering fire burning household trash and other items outside a proper container.
