At 2:16 PM West Mead #1 was dispatched for a reported structure fire at Woodland Heights on Arthur Street. West Mead #2, Meadville Central, Meadville Ambulance, Vernon Central, Vernon Township, East Mead/Blooming Valley, and Cochranton were also requested to assist. Engines 28-12, 28-13, and 28-11 responded to the three-story multi-family complex. Fire Chief Brad Johnston arrived on scene and reported smoke in a basement laundry area, and requested all units except the two West Mead departments and Meadville Central to stand by their stations. Firefighters found a washer appliance component had failed, spreading smoke throughout the building. An exhaust fan and positive pressure ventilation (PPV) fan were used to clear the basement area of smoke. After working with maintenance staff to secure the electrical panel, Department 28 returned to stations and service by 3:01 PM.
