West Mead #1 trained this week in surface ice rescue. Members traveled to West Mead #2 with 28-13 and 28-14 along with Blooming Valley Fire Department and East Mead Fire Department. Crews were given the scenario of responding with their respective departments for a man through the ice. Crews then evaluated what equipment each department has first due and how to use the equipment to safely conduct a rescue prior to the arrival of scuba. Firefighter safety was stressed throughout the evening, along with the message that structural fire gear and water rescues don’t mix.

Coaching the victim to shore along with reaching and throwing were discussed. Scuba Team members from both West Mead departments and Blooming Valley facilitated the discussion. Members from the departments then traveled to a pond at the Country Club to practice each evolution.
