At 9 PM on Tuesday West Mead #1 was dispatched as part of a second alarm to assist Cochranton with a structure fire on Stizerville Road. 28-12 and 28-13 responded with crews to the scene, a two-story wood frame house with an attached garage. On arrival 28-12’s crew was assigned truck company operations and prepared to vent the roof on the delta side. An evacuation order was given before personnel and equipment were on the roof, so 28 crews shifted to exterior fire suppression operations.
During overhaul two Vernon Township firefighters fell through the second floor to the first. A mayday was sounded and other firefighters helped to extricate them. They were transported by ambulance to Meadville Medical Center for evaluation. According to news reports, their injuries were not life-threatening and a full recovery is expected.
28-12 and 13 helped with a tanker shuttle bringing water from Cochranton station under icy conditions. After a front tire went flat on 28-12, that engine was placed out of service overnight. 28-14 was dispatched to pick up personnel and equipment from the scene.
28-13 and 14 returned to service by 2:00 AM on Wednesday.
Next day 28 was dispatched again to assist with a rekindle that spread to the garage at the residence. The house and garage were a total loss.
Cochranton, Randolph, East Mead, Utica, Greenwood, Vernon Central, Vernon Township, West Mead #2, and Meadville Ambulance also operated on scene.
